Princess Mononoke

For my second year project, our brief was surrounding the Studio Ghibli production Princess Mononoke. In collaboration with my fellow makeup students, and creatives from other courses, we worked as a group to come to a final realisation of our proposed characters that will interact and perform in a short video. I chose to reinterpret the character of San, as I was drawn to the warrior nature and the idea of the representation of a human in an animal world. I wanted to keep the concept of the character being human, but show the effect the worlds situation had on her and how she has adapted to the lifestyle. To keep the warrior aspect of her character design, her hair was styled in intricate braids with flowers weaved in between. With a dark, bloody and haunting makeup, she sports a bullet hole prosthetic on her cheek in a simplistic manner. I was keen to not over dramatise this prosthetic to be able to hold on to the overall effect it has, and have a good balance between it and the rest of the makeup.
